New diabetes medicines and dementia risk in older adults with type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Among 84,798 individuals, new-generation antidiabetic medication use is associated with a reduced dementia risk (HR = 0.69).

  • Dementia was diagnosed in 11,642 (13.7%) of the participants.
  • The median follow-up period for dementia risk was 8.7 years.
  • Use of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors is associated with a lower dementia risk (HR 0.67).
  • Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors are associated with a dementia risk reduction (HR 0.63).
  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 analogs are associated with a lower risk of developing dementia (HR 0.61).
