New treatments for diabetic kidney disease

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure worldwide.

  • Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is linked to higher rates of cardiovascular and overall mortality.
  • The progression of DKD involves complex interactions of blood flow, metabolism, and inflammation.
  • Current management focuses on four main types of medications that target the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and glucose regulation.
  • Despite optimal treatment, significant risk for heart and kidney complications remains in patients with DKD.
  • New therapies under development aim to enhance current treatments and improve health outcomes for patients with DKD.
