No signs of better energy use after 1 week of nitrate and citrulline supplements in elite rowers

Updated

Abstract

No differences were observed in energy metabolism or substrate utilization after 1 week of co-supplementation with 3.5 g beetroot extract and 6 g citrulline in elite rowers.

  • Citrulline and beetroot extract supplements are thought to enhance exercise performance but their effects on metabolic outcomes remain unclear.
  • Twenty elite male rowers participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial.
  • No significant differences were found in respiratory exchange ratio, energy expenditure, or gross efficiency between the supplement and placebo groups.
  • Data from performance tests showed no interaction effects on oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, or substrate oxidation.
  • Results suggest that longer supplementation periods or higher doses may be necessary to observe effects on metabolism.
