How Nighttime Light Levels Affect Adjustment to Three Night Shifts in a Row

Abstract

Bright light caused a mean phase delay of 3:17 hours in salivary dim-light melatonin onset after three night shifts.

  • Subjective alertness and neurobehavioural performance decreased during simulated night shifts under both bright and standard light conditions.
  • Bright light significantly reduced the deterioration of alertness and performance compared to standard light.
  • The delay in dim-light melatonin onset was greater after exposure to bright light than after standard light.
  • These findings suggest bright light may enhance adaptation to night work.
