Using breathing support without tubes for cystic fibrosis

Updated

Abstract

The evidence regarding the effects of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) on cystic fibrosis patients is very uncertain, based on 14 studies with a total of 261 participants.

  • NIPPV may not significantly impact the amount of dry sputum expectorated compared to other methods, such as the PEP mask and directed coughing.
  • Patient-reported tiredness could be lower after using BiPAP compared to the PEP mask, though the data supporting this is limited.
  • The short-term effects of BiPAP combined with airway clearance techniques on hospital stay and adverse events are uncertain.
  • For stable cystic fibrosis patients, the acute effects of BiPAP on lung function measures like FEV₁ and FVC are not clearly established.
  • The studies included had methodological limitations and assessed few critical outcomes, contributing to the overall uncertainty of the findings.
