Notoginsenoside R1 may reduce brain injury after stroke by blocking immune signals through the gut-brain connection

Updated

Abstract

NG-R1 significantly reduced neuronal death and neuroinflammation in middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion models.

  • NG-R1 treatment reversed microbiota alterations associated with middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion models.
  • Intestinal inflammation, gut barrier destruction, and systemic inflammation were attenuated by NG-R1 administration.
  • Microbiota transplantation from NG-R1 treated subjects showed similar protective effects in the MCAO/R models.
  • NG-R1 treatment restored the structure of the blood-brain barrier and reduced neuroinflammation.
  • The TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway was suppressed in both the ischemic brain and colon following NG-R1 treatment.
