Can Ultramarathon Runners Eat Enough to Meet Nutrition Guidelines?

Abstract

Habitual carbohydrate intake was lower than recommended in ultramarathon runners (n = 68).

  • 75% of athletes consumed less than 60 g/h of carbohydrates during the race.
  • Mean protein intake was below recommendations for women.
  • GI distress was reported by 82% of runners, though severe cases were low.
  • A considerable variation in nutrient and fluid intake was observed among participants.
  • Moderate, mostly negative correlations were found between nutrient intake and GI distress.
