Nutritional Guidelines to Support Weight Loss Treatment with GLP-1 Medications

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1s can reduce body weight by 5% to 18% in clinical trials.

  • Real-world effects of GLP-1s on weight reduction are modestly lower than in trials.
  • Challenges associated with GLP-1 treatment include gastrointestinal side effects, nutritional deficiencies, muscle and bone loss, and low long-term adherence.
  • Despite recommendations for evidence-based nutritional and behavioral therapy, the use of these therapies alongside GLP-1s is not widespread.
  • Key priorities for improving GLP-1 treatment outcomes include patient-centered initiation, comprehensive baseline screening, and lifestyle assessments.
  • Supportive strategies such as group visits and registered dietitian counseling may enhance the management of obesity with GLP-1s.
