Nutritional health of female athletes with mild eating disorders

Abstract

Mean energy intake was 1,989 kcal/day for female athletes with subclinical eating disorders, compared to 2,300 kcal/day for control subjects.

  • Energy expenditure was similar between the two groups, with athletes with subclinical eating disorders expending 2,405 kcal/day and control athletes expending 2,293 kcal/day.
  • Female athletes with subclinical eating disorders had significantly lower mean protein and fat intakes compared to control athletes.
  • Mean micronutrient intakes were not significantly different between the two groups.
  • Iron, zinc, magnesium, vitamin B-12, and folate levels were within normal ranges for both groups, indicating adequate micronutrient status.
  • A similar proportion of athletes in both groups reported using vitamin/mineral supplements four times per week or less.
