Improved care and treatment results for obesity and knee arthritis in primary care

Updated

Abstract

The lifetime risk of developing knee osteoarthritis is approximately doubled in people with obesity compared to those without.

  • Weight loss through lifestyle interventions is strongly supported as a primary treatment for patients with knee osteoarthritis and obesity.
  • Improvements in pain, physical function, and quality of life are associated with weight loss interventions, but adherence is often challenging.
  • Obesity medications, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, are emerging as new strategies for weight management in knee osteoarthritis.
  • A recent phase 3 clinical study indicated benefits of semaglutide for weight loss in adults with knee osteoarthritis and high body mass index.
  • Further clinical evidence is needed to determine optimal treatment duration and tolerability profiles for obesity medications in this patient population.
