Possible two-way relationship between obesity and male sex hormones using genetic analysis

Abstract

Genetically predicted elevated BMI was associated with decreased SHBG and BioT levels and high estradiol levels.

  • Elevated BMI is linked to lower levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and bioavailable testosterone (BioT).
  • Increased SHBG levels are associated with lower BMI and BioT levels and higher estradiol levels.
  • No causal effect of estradiol imbalance on SHBG levels or BMI was observed.
  • Increased BioT levels are linked to lower SHBG levels but not to BMI.
  • The findings suggest a network putative causal relationship among BMI, SHBG, BioT, and estradiol.
