How Occupational Therapy Helps People with Long COVID

Updated

Abstract

Twenty-one articles were included for data extraction regarding the role of occupational therapy for adults and older adults with long COVID.

  • Occupational therapy addresses long COVID symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and cognitive impairments.
  • Interventions often occur in rehabilitation settings and focus on retraining in activities of daily living and cognitive rehabilitation.
  • Physical and breathing exercises, patient education, return-to-work planning, and psychosocial support are also key components of the therapy.
  • Current studies emphasize interprofessional, team-based interventions rather than solely occupational therapy-specific approaches.
  • There is a recognized need for further research to clarify the unique contributions of occupational therapy within interprofessional teams.
