Oral Semaglutide and Kidney Health in People With Type 2 Diabetes: Results From a Clinical Trial
Updated
Abstract
Among 9,650 participants, the five-point composite kidney outcome occurred in 8.4% of those taking oral semaglutide compared to 9.0% on placebo.
- Oral semaglutide is associated with a mean annual decline in kidney function of -1.67 mL/min/1.73 m2, compared to -2.06 mL/min/1.73 m2 for placebo.
- The reduction in kidney function decline with oral semaglutide represents an estimated treatment difference of 0.40 mL/min/1.73 m2.
- The five-point composite kidney outcome did not show a significant difference between the semaglutide and placebo groups (hazard ratio 0.91).
- The four-point kidney outcome also did not show significant differences between groups (hazard ratio 0.86).
- Similar rates of serious adverse events were observed in both the semaglutide and placebo groups.
