Outdoor Nighttime Light and Children's Body Weight: A Snapshot from the Fr1da Study

Updated

Abstract

Children exposed to light at night (LAN) may experience a 34.0% increase in body mass index z-scores per 10 nW/cm/sr increment in LAN exposure.

  • An association exists between LAN exposure and increased BMI z-scores in children under 11 years old.
  • The increase in BMI z-scores was observed both at baseline and one year prior to screening.
  • Results remained consistent after adjusting for factors such as socioeconomic status and urbanization.
  • These findings indicate that exposure to outdoor light at night could be linked to weight gain in childhood.
