Female hormones, oxytocin, and inflammation signals influence horse fallopian tube function

Updated

Abstract

Protein expression of estrogen receptors 1 and 2, progesterone receptor, and oxytocin receptor in mare oviduct varies with the estrous cycle stage.

  • During the follicular phase, protein levels of estrogen receptors and progesterone receptor increased in oviduct explants.
  • In contrast, mRNA transcription levels for progesterone receptor increased while oxytocin receptor, prostaglandin E2 synthase, and prostaglandin F2α synthase levels decreased during the follicular phase.
  • In the infundibulum, mRNA levels of prostaglandin F2α synthase were upregulated, while no changes were observed for estrogen receptors or progesterone receptor.
  • Estradiol, progesterone, and oxytocin treatment downregulated prostaglandin E2 production by oviductal epithelial cells during the follicular phase.
  • Prostaglandin F2α production by oviductal epithelial cells was downregulated in the follicular phase but upregulated in the mid-luteal phase.
