How overnight fasting length and timing relate to body weight in older adults

Updated

Abstract

Among 994 participants, longer overnight fasting is associated with a 53% reduction in the odds of being overweight or obese for those with early fasting times.

  • Early overnight fasting (before 02:19 am) correlates with lower odds of overweight and obesity as fasting duration increases.
  • Conversely, late overnight fasting (after 02:19 am) is associated with higher odds of overweight and obesity with longer fasting durations.
  • Participants in the longest fasting duration quintile experienced a 53% reduction in overweight and obesity odds in the early fasting group.
  • In the late fasting group, the longest fasting duration was linked to a 2.36-fold increase in the odds of being overweight or obese.
  • Associations remained consistent even after adjusting for dietary intakes during morning and late evening periods.
