Levels and location of oxytocin receptor gene and protein in fetal and maternal membranes during childbirth
Updated
Abstract
Oxytocin receptor (OTR) gene expression in chorio-decidual tissue increased fivefold during parturition.
- Enhanced expression of OTR mRNA was demonstrated in chorio-decidual tissue.
- OTR mRNA was found in both maternally derived decidual cells and fetally derived chorionic trophoblast cells.
- The distribution of OTR protein mirrored the pattern of OTR mRNA expression.
- Regulation of OTR expression is primarily at the transcriptional level.
- Findings suggest that decidual OTR may play a role in initiating and amplifying labor.
