New Understanding of Childhood Fatty Liver Disease from a Hormone Perspective

Updated

Abstract

Paediatric metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease in children and adolescents worldwide.

  • MASLD is increasingly prevalent alongside rising rates of paediatric obesity and type 2 diabetes.
  • It can occur in children without obesity and is influenced by early life exposures, genetics, and environmental factors.
  • There is a significant link between paediatric MASLD and youth-onset type 2 diabetes due to shared physiological mechanisms.
  • Hepatic fat accumulation can develop early in insulin resistance, even in preschool-age children.
  • Epidemiological trends indicate higher MASLD prevalence in male and Hispanic youth, with more severe disease associated with impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes.
  • 20-25% of affected youth show clinically significant liver fibrosis, with distinct patterns in childhood disease.
