UK children's speech therapists' views on using telehealth now and in the future based on the APEASE criteria

Updated

Abstract

Four hundred and thirty-eight qualified and practicing UK paediatric speech and language therapists completed an online survey on telehealth services.

  • Telehealth is broadly acceptable and practicable for UK speech and language therapists, but there is uncertainty regarding its efficacy and cost-effectiveness compared to face-to-face interventions.
  • Affordability is perceived as a barrier to clients accessing telehealth resources.
  • SLTs find intervention via telehealth to be more acceptable than assessment.
  • Concerns exist about the physical and mental health consequences of telehealth for practitioners.
  • Six key themes for future telehealth development were identified: balanced and tailored services, technology and equipment, information and communication, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation, and leadership and governance.
  • A hybrid approach combining mostly face-to-face services with some telehealth is likely to continue in the future.
