Paid parental leave helps breastfeeding and mother-baby bonding after birth linked to mothers returning to work

Updated

Abstract

Of 205 eligible women, 165 (81%) agreed to participate in the study.

  • A significant association exists between lower employment participation and reduced odds of continuing breastfeeding at 10 months postpartum (OR=0.22, p=0.004).
  • Higher levels of maternal separation anxiety are linked to lower employment participation (OR=0.23, p=0.01).
  • Adjustments were made for maternal age, education, occupational status, and paid maternity leave in the analysis.
  • The findings suggest that employment participation may impact both breastfeeding duration and maternal emotional attachment.
