Using Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) to Prevent or Treat Pain in Newborn Babies

Updated

Abstract

In a review of eight trials involving 614 infants, paracetamol did not significantly reduce pain associated with common neonatal procedures.

  • Paracetamol did not lower pain scores after heel lance compared to water or other analgesics.
  • Infants receiving paracetamol showed higher pain scores than those given oral glucose after heel lance.
  • Following assisted vaginal birth, paracetamol did not alleviate pain and may have increased pain responses to subsequent procedures.
  • No significant pain reduction was observed during eye examinations when paracetamol was used.
  • For postoperative care, paracetamol may decrease the total morphine requirement in infants after major surgery.
  • No adverse events were reported in any of the included studies.
