Peer Bullying and Problematic Internet Use in Teens: The Role of Humor

Updated

Abstract

A study involving 469 middle school students found that depression partially mediates the relationship between peer victimization and problematic Internet use (PIU).

  • Peer victimization is linked to increased risk of problematic Internet use among adolescents.
  • Depression serves as a partial mediator in the relationship between peer victimization and PIU.
  • Humor moderates the indirect relationship between peer victimization and depression.
  • The relationship between peer victimization and depression is stronger for adolescents with high humor.
  • Conversely, the relationship between depression and PIU is weaker in adolescents with high humor.
