Differences in energy needs and nutrient intake among NCAA athlete groups

Abstract

Athletes answered 45.5% of questions correctly on a sports nutrition knowledge questionnaire.

  • Significant differences in knowledge scores were observed between male (48.6%) and female athletes (43.6%), as well as between Division I (38.8%) and Division II (47.7%) and Division III (51.7%) athletes.
  • All athletes significantly underestimated their daily energy intake requirements, with females averaging 2,112 kcal/day and males averaging 3,283 kcal/day.
  • Male athletes scored higher in mindfulness regarding eating habits (65.1) compared to female athletes (60.9).
  • Overall, collegiate athletes displayed poor sports nutrition knowledge across all divisions.
