Dexmedetomidine for managing sudden pain after abdominal surgery in adults

Updated

Abstract

A total of 422 participants were analyzed in the review of dexmedetomidine for postoperative pain management after abdominal surgery.

  • Dexmedetomidine may reduce 'rescue' opioid consumption in the first 24 hours post-surgery, according to most studies.
  • Postoperative pain levels did not show clinically significant differences between dexmedetomidine and placebo, except for one study indicating lower pain at two hours post-surgery.
  • The quality of evidence for primary outcomes was very low due to imprecision and risk of bias across the studies.
  • Limited data suggest a higher incidence of hypotension requiring intervention in the high-dose dexmedetomidine group compared to controls.
  • Insufficient evidence was available to draw robust conclusions regarding dexmedetomidine compared to fentanyl.
