Abstract
The use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) is increasing among patients undergoing surgical procedures.
- GLP-1RAs are associated with delayed gastric emptying, which may lead to residual gastric contents during surgery.
- Patients undergoing cranial or spinal surgeries while on GLP-1RAs may experience increased risks of postoperative complications.
- Common postoperative complications for these patients include aspiration, delayed extubation, and nausea and vomiting.
- There is a need for focused clinical reviews to address the implications of GLP-1RA use in surgical settings.
