Surgery Safety and Results Linked to GLP-1-Based Treatments

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist use is associated with increased residual gastric contents and delayed gastric emptying in adults undergoing sedation or general anesthesia.

  • Sixteen studies, including seven observational studies, showed an association between GLP-1 RA use and altered gastric physiology.
  • Gastric ultrasound and endoscopic assessments revealed increased residual gastric contents and delayed gastric emptying despite standard fasting protocols.
  • Clinically apparent aspiration or regurgitation events were uncommon and primarily noted in case reports.
  • Larger observational studies did not show a clear increase in aspiration or broader perioperative complications.
  • Changes in clinical management were noted, including alterations to anesthetic planning and postponement of elective procedures based on retained gastric contents.
  • Individualized preoperative risk assessment and selective use of gastric ultrasound may improve perioperative decision-making.
