Periostin’s role, markers, and treatment possibilities in diabetic kidney disease

Updated

Abstract

Serum, urinary, and renal tissue levels of periostin (POSTN) are elevated in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and correlate with proteinuria and renal fibrosis.

  • Periostin expression is low in healthy kidneys but significantly increases in response to renal injury and fibrosis.
  • Higher levels of POSTN are associated with a decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in DKD patients.
  • Preclinical studies suggest that POSTN may promote inflammation and fibrosis in the kidneys.
  • Inhibition of POSTN in preclinical DKD models has been shown to reduce renal injury and fibrosis.
  • POSTN has not yet been tested in human clinical trials, indicating it could be a potential target for future therapies.
