Ongoing fatigue after long COVID is not linked to blood inflammation or cell stress markers

Updated

Abstract

Long-COVID patients exhibited significantly higher fatigue severity than recovered controls, with median scores of 63 versus 5 on the Fatigue Visual Analog Scale.

  • Fatigue severity was assessed using three validated instruments, all showing higher scores for long-COVID patients compared to recovered controls.
  • Depression scores were also significantly elevated in long-COVID cases, indicating a potential link between fatigue and mental health.
  • No significant differences were found in the measured biomarkers between long-COVID patients and recovered controls, including pro-inflammatory markers.
  • Tendencies toward higher levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in long-COVID patients were noted but did not reach statistical significance.
  • The low positivity rate of anti-nuclear antibodies in both groups suggests minimal autoimmune involvement in fatigue levels.
  • The results indicate that long-COVID fatigue may involve complex mechanisms not captured by traditional inflammatory biomarkers.
