Ongoing symptoms after COVID-19 infection in children and young people: A combined analysis of studies with and without comparison groups

Updated

Abstract

In a review of 22 studies involving 23,141 children and young people, the median follow-up duration was 125 days.

  • Cognitive difficulties, headache, loss of smell, sore throat, and sore eyes showed a higher prevalence in post-COVID cases compared to controls.
  • The pooled prevalence of symptoms in post-COVID participants ranged from 15% for diarrhoea to 47% for fatigue.
  • Age was associated with a higher prevalence of all symptoms except cough.
  • Higher quality studies tended to report lower prevalence of symptoms, with exceptions for loss of smell and cognitive difficulties.
