Herbivorous fish assemblages shifted from dominance of cool-water species to increased evenness among temperate and tropical groups following an extreme marine heatwave.

  • Herbivory-related functions, including macroalgae and sediment removal, were modified following the heatwave and subsequent cooling period.
  • Abundance and intensity of tropical herbivorous fishes and their functions declined after returning to cooler conditions.
  • The trait structure of herbivorous fishes showed limited recovery despite changes in environmental conditions.
  • Algal communities did not recover, transitioning from the dominant kelp species to an alternative state dominated by turf and Sargassum.
