Phentermine and Topiramate may reduce weight regain after gastric bypass surgery

Updated

Abstract

Phentermine and topiramate may significantly reduce weight regain after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in patients.

  • Weight regain after gastric bypass surgery starts to occur approximately 2 years post-operation and affects at least 25% of patients.
  • A review of electronic medical records from 1,196 patients who underwent surgery identified a subset of 760 patients who reached their lowest weight after the procedure.
  • Statistical analysis indicated that the use of antiobesity medications, specifically phentermine and topiramate, is associated with a reduction in weight regain.
  • The study found a consistent effect of these medications across multiple statistical models, despite the absence of a unified protocol for their use.
