Improved light therapy helps reduce inflammatory bowel disease by changing immune responses and gut bacteria

Updated

Abstract

PBM therapy significantly improved DSS-induced colitis in mice, evidenced by a reduction in disease activity index scores (p < 0.001).

  • Inflammatory cell infiltration, crypt damage, and ulceration were notably reduced with PBM therapy (p < 0.05).
  • Colon length was restored in PBM-treated mice, indicating improved gut health.
  • Transcriptomic profiling showed downregulation of inflammatory pathways, including NF-κB signaling and genes related to cell death.
  • PBM therapy decreased neutrophil activity and immune cell marker expression.
  • An increase in gut microbiota richness was observed, along with a higher abundance of protective bacterial taxa such as Bacteroides.
