Physical Fitness After Diet-Related Weight Loss with Exercise, GLP-1 Treatment, or Both in Adults with Obesity

Participants randomized to exercise performed a median of 2.65 sessions per week during the study.

  • Exercise combined with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist treatment improved physical functional performance, reducing stair climb time by 1.2 seconds compared to liraglutide alone.
  • Cardiorespiratory fitness increased by 3.0 mL/min/kg fat-free mass with the combination treatment compared to liraglutide alone.
  • Exercise alone provided similar benefits in physical functional performance and cardiorespiratory fitness as the combination treatment.
  • Liraglutide alone did not enhance physical fitness outcomes.
  • Relative muscle strength was improved with exercise, liraglutide, and combined treatment compared to placebo, but not with liraglutide alone.
