Abstract

Involving 2797 participants across 58 trials, cardiorespiratory training reduced disability in stroke survivors.

  • Cardiorespiratory training showed moderate improvement in global disability scores (standardized mean difference 0.52).
  • Mixed training led to a small improvement in disability scores (standardized mean difference 0.26).
  • Walking-focused cardiorespiratory training improved maximum walking speed by 6.71 meters per minute.
  • Mixed training increased preferred walking speed by 4.54 meters per minute and walking capacity by 41.60 meters in six minutes.
  • Balance scores improved slightly after mixed training (standardized mean difference 0.27).
  • Insufficient evidence exists to support resistance training, and the effects on death and dependence remain unclear.
