Estimating natural aging using common health markers in older adults from China and the UK

Abstract

In a cohort of 12,769 elderly Chinese individuals, the (PAI) achieved a concordance index (C-index) of 0.816 for predicting mortality.

  • PAI incorporates 36 clinical biomarkers and captures nonlinear associations with mortality.
  • In the DFTJ cohort, 25 biomarkers were identified with significant nonlinear relationships to mortality; 11 showed insignificant linear associations.
  • ΔPAI, a measure of aging acceleration, was predictive of incident cardiovascular diseases (CVD) independent of traditional risk factors.
  • PAI outperformed chronological age and PhenoAge in mortality prediction, both in the DFTJ cohort and external validation with the UK Biobank.
  • In the UK Biobank, PAI had a C-index of 0.749 for mortality prediction, surpassing both chronological age and PhenoAge.
