Police stress and depression symptoms: how coping skills and resilience relate

Updated

Abstract

A significant positive association was observed between total stress and depressive symptoms in 388 police officers, with a CES-D score increase of 1.98 for each unit increase in stress.

  • Higher stress levels are linked to increased depressive symptoms as measured by the CES-D scale.
  • Officers with lower passive coping strategies reported higher depressive symptoms.
  • Higher active coping strategies are associated with lower depressive symptom scores.
  • Officers exhibiting greater hardiness, particularly in commitment and control, showed reduced depressive symptoms.
