Abstract

Developmental exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) led to reduced locomotor activity in zebrafish at both larval (5 days post-fertilization) and adult (157 days post-fertilization) stages.

  • Early-life exposure to PS-NPs may alter behavioral responses to hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in adult zebrafish.
  • Adult fish previously exposed to PS-NPs did not exhibit significant changes in activity when exposed to HBCD, unlike unexposed fish which showed hyperactivity.
  • Altered expressions of neurological and neurodevelopmental genes were observed, indicating potential epigenetic influences on behavior.
  • Global DNA methylation levels were modified by early PS-NP exposure, which may contribute to the observed behavioral differences.
