Dissolving microneedles for skin delivery of semaglutide to reduce obesity in rats

Updated

Abstract

Sema-MNs contained 29 ± 2 μg semaglutide per patch, delivering 18 ± 2 μg effectively.

  • Sema-MNs concentrated semaglutide at the needle tips and penetrated rat skin effectively.
  • The microneedles released more than 90% of their semaglutide cargo within 30 minutes.
  • Once-daily treatment with Sema-MNs for 7 days led to reduced food intake and body weight in obese rats.
  • Treatment decreased adipocyte size and hepatic lipid accumulation and improved glucose tolerance.
  • No significant kidney or major organ abnormalities were observed during the study.
