Long-lasting COVID-19 symptoms over 3 years in survivors of severe lung injury without ongoing blood clotting or blood vessel problems

Updated

Abstract

Essence

PASC persisted for up to 3 years after severe COVID-19 ALI/ARDS and tracked with frailty and poorer physical function, not persistent thromboinflammatory or endothelial biomarker elevation.

Evidence

This single-center prospective cohort followed 150 adult survivors of severe and critical first-wave COVID-19 with serial serum biomarkers through discharge, 4 months, 15 months, and 3 years plus symptom and function measures at 15 months and 3 years.

Caveat

The cohort was single-center and observational, and the measured inflammatory, endothelial, and complement biomarkers may not capture the mechanisms driving persistent symptoms.
