Worsening of symptoms after moderate exercise in people with chronic fatigue syndrome and long COVID

Updated

Abstract

Among individuals with ME/CFS and PASC, 46 out of 60 reported increased physical fatigue after exercise.

  • Symptoms can worsen for days to weeks after physical activity, a phenomenon called post-exertional symptom exacerbation (PESE).
  • Variability exists in symptom responses, with some individuals experiencing significant increases while others report minimal changes.
  • An aggregate score of 4-5 specific symptoms is helpful in assessing maximal changes in PESE.
  • Changes in symptoms were most pronounced within 72 hours following exercise, especially in those with ME/CFS.
  • Some participants showed no significant increase in PESE after exercise, suggesting that modifications in exercise intensity could be beneficial for others.
