Nausea and vomiting after children's eye muscle surgery with two types of anesthesia: breathing gas versus intravenous drugs

Updated

Abstract

Vomiting occurred less frequently in the propofol/remifentanil group (21 of 53) compared to the sevoflurane/N2O group (32 of 52) within the first 24 hours postoperatively.

  • Propofol/remifentanil anesthesia is associated with a lower incidence of vomiting in children undergoing strabismus surgery compared to sevoflurane/N2O.
  • Nausea and vomiting were observed more frequently after posterior fixation suture operations than after recessions.
  • Among the 44 patients who had posterior fixation suture operations, 30 experienced nausea and vomiting, while only 12 of 35 patients undergoing recessions had similar issues.
  • The type of operation may influence the occurrence of postoperative nausea and vomiting.
