Patterns of PTSD symptoms and sleep problems linked to drinking to cope in college students

Updated

Abstract

Latent profile analyses identified three subgroups of trauma-exposed college students based on PTSD symptoms and sleep disturbances.

  • The subgroups identified were High PTSD-Sleep Disturbances (n = 71), Moderate PTSD-Sleep Disturbances (n = 135), and Low PTSD-Sleep Disturbances (n = 268).
  • Students in the Low PTSD-Sleep Disturbances group reported the least coping-related drinking motives.
  • There was no significant difference in coping-related drinking motives between the Moderate and High PTSD-Sleep Disturbances groups.
  • Subclinical levels of PTSD and sleep disturbances may contribute to risky drinking motives among college students.
