Sleep medicine

Links between traumatic experiences, sleep problems, PTSD symptoms, and alcohol use in young adults

Updated

Abstract

In a sample of 1599 college students, 33.7% reported experiencing at least one interpersonal potentially traumatic event (PTE).

  • Interpersonal PTE exposure significantly predicted disturbed sleep (β = 0.202, p = 0.000), while accidental PTE exposure did not.
  • PTSD symptoms mediated the relationship between interpersonal PTE exposure and sleep disturbances, accounting for 61% of the total effects.
  • AUD symptoms also mediated the relationship, accounting for 17% of the total effects on sleep.
  • In a correlated mediation model, PTSD symptoms accounted for 56% and AUD symptoms for 14% of the total effects on sleep.
  • Interpersonal PTEs appear to be stronger predictors of sleep problems compared to accidental PTEs.
