Body clock timing before the pandemic predicts teen alcohol use during the pandemic

Abstract

Adolescents with later circadian timing reported larger increases in alcohol use during the pandemic than their peers.

  • Later circadian timing is associated with less sleep on school nights in adolescents.
  • School night sleep increased for all adolescents during the pandemic, but not more for those with later circadian timing.
  • Depressive symptoms in adolescents increased during the pandemic, regardless of circadian timing.
  • Individuals with later circadian timing showed the sharpest increases in alcohol use, indicating a potential risk factor beyond insufficient sleep.
