Precise pest control using gene editing tools like CRISPR/Cas9 and future possibilities

Updated

Abstract

Essence

CRISPR/Cas9 and related genome editing tools are presented as promising routes for more precise pest control.

Evidence

This review synthesizes insect genome editing strategies, including CRISPR/Cas9, RNAi integration, gene drives, base and prime editing, paratransgenesis, and plant-mediated editing.

Caveat

Field effectiveness and ecological safety remain uncertain because delivery, off-target edits, transmission stability, resistance, sterility, and long-term surveillance are unresolved challenges.
