Factors linked to how non-drug treatments affect thinking and behavior in older people with dementia

Updated

Abstract

141 old veterans with dementia participated in a non-pharmacological intervention program over 6 months.

  • Improvement in cognitive function was linked to lower Mini-Mental State Examination scores at baseline.
  • Participants using antipsychotics were less likely to experience cognitive improvement.
  • Higher baseline total scores on the neuropsychiatric inventory were associated with improvement in behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.
  • Improvements in the neuropsychiatric inventory behavior domain correlated with higher Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia scores.
  • Hearing impairment was associated with lower chances of improvement in both the neuropsychiatric inventory behavior domain and caregiver burden.
