Best number of back-to-back night shifts for Danish police officers

Abstract

At baseline, 49% of police officers in Denmark preferred four consecutive night shifts.

  • At follow-up, 57% preferred the intervention of four consecutive night shifts followed by four days off.
  • Preferences for two or seven consecutive night shifts were each reported by 26% of participants.
  • Participants favoring longer night shifts reported finding night work less demanding.
  • Those who preferred longer night shifts also found it easier to sleep at various times of the day.
  • Evening types were more common among participants preferring longer spells of night work.
