How Cattle Establish Pregnancy Without Embryo Signaling Protein Interferon Tau

Updated

Abstract

IFNT is completely dispensable for pregnancy recognition in cattle.

  • Genomic loss-of-function models show that interferon tau (IFNT) is not necessary for luteal maintenance and full-term gestation.
  • IFNT-null embryos develop into blastocysts at normal rates and demonstrate typical elongation by day 18 post-transfer.
  • These embryos do not induce endometrial genes typically stimulated by interferon.
  • IFNT-null conceptuses prevent luteal regression and establish normal placentation.
  • Successful full-term gestations culminate in the birth of healthy female calves.
