How common long-term COVID-19 symptoms are at different times after infection: a review and analysis

Abstract

Among 257,348 individuals, 32% reported fatigue at 3 to <6 months after recovering from COVID-19.

  • Common persistent symptoms at 3 to <6 months included fatigue (32%), dyspnea (25%), sleep disorder (24%), and difficulty concentrating (22%).
  • At 6 to <9 months, the most prevalent symptoms were effort intolerance (45%), fatigue (36%), sleep disorder (29%), and dyspnea (25%).
  • At 9 to <12 months, fatigue (37%) and dyspnea (21%) remained notable symptoms.
  • For follow-ups beyond 12 months, fatigue (41%), dyspnea (31%), sleep disorder (30%), and myalgia (22%) were frequently reported.
  • Substantial variability was observed among studies regarding the prevalence of these symptoms.
  • Significant factors influencing symptom prevalence included world region, male sex, diabetes, disease severity, and study quality.
