How common prescription opioid use is and what predicts it in U.S. adults with long COVID

Abstract

Of 877 US adults with long COVID, 144 were prescribed an opioid.

  • The study estimates that 16.4% of adults with long COVID were prescribed opioids.
  • Increased odds of being prescribed an opioid are associated with poor income status, with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.8.
  • Having significant pain interference is linked to a higher likelihood of opioid prescription (adjusted odds ratio of 4.3).
  • Nonsmokers are more likely to be prescribed opioids compared to smokers, with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.7.
  • The findings may assist in understanding the management of long COVID in relation to opioid prescriptions.
